Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper care is essential to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime. Follow these aftercare steps:
1. Keep It Clean
First Wash: Gently remove the bandage after 2-4 hours (unless otherwise instructed). Wash your hands first, then clean the tattoo using lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap.
Pat Dry: Use a clean, soft paper towel or allow the area to air dry. Avoid rubbing.
2. Apply Moisturizer
Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of a tattoo-friendly ointment or fragrance-free lotion (like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific balm). Do not overapply.
3. Let It Breathe
Avoid re-bandaging unless advised by your artist. Allow your tattoo to breathe to promote healing.
4. Protect Your Tattoo
Avoid Sun: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. After it’s fully healed, always use sunscreen with SPF 30+ to prevent fading.
No Soaking: Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or soaking in baths for 2-3 weeks. Quick showers are fine.
5. Don’t Pick or Scratch
It’s normal for your tattoo to scab and itch during healing. Resist the urge to pick or scratch—it could cause scarring or loss of ink.
6. Wear Loose Clothing
Opt for loose, breathable clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo. Tight fabrics can cause irritation.
Healing Timeline
Days 1-3: Redness and slight swelling are normal.
Days 4-14: Scabbing, flaking, and itching may occur. Moisturize regularly.
Weeks 2-4: Your tattoo will look slightly dull or milky as it heals.
When to Contact Your Artist or a Doctor
If you notice signs of infection (excessive redness, pus, or prolonged swelling) or if you have any concerns about healing, contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional immediately.
